oh hello there

Yeah, is it really March 12th?  no.no.  That can’t be.  I have been royally slacking over here… but the good news, I have been making things!!  Just not the best at getting pictures uploaded, edited and getting posts put together.

So until I get some photos of my most recent creations ready for your viewing pleasure… I thought I would share a little tour of my gals rooms!

I had an orange obsession last year, when we painted Saida’s room and that has morphed into a teal obsession this year as we set up Camille’s.  This is also the year we are painting the first floor… and I seriously need an intervention, otherwise, the entire house may end up some shade of blue green.

I really like the mix of new, handmade and thrift finds.  Those shoes, her daddy and her papa both wore them at their Christenings.DSCN0446

These curtains and the rug came from Urban Outfitters.  I never would have thought to look their for kids room stuff, but I stumbled across them and I am so happy I did.  I wanted something bright and playful, but still useful and not overly kiddy, something she could grow into… and I like them so much that I could use these in an office or guest room when she gets old enough to want a change.DSCN0461

Saidas Room

I have to say, I really love how Camille’s room turned out.  It may be one of my favorite spaces in the house.  The color is so relaxing, but still so fun and colorful.  DSCN0711

I was thrilled to have an opportunity to make some decor pieces for the nursery.  We were moving when we had Saida and then again a year later… so she did not end up with much of a nursery… being more settled this time around I was all about it!  The poms were a fun creation to work on in the late stages of pregnancy and the curtian was made with scraps from the frame and fabric wall… this was my first time sewing something to be used!  It shows, but I don’t care, i like it!  The letters were a fun project too, Saida and I painted away our summer afternoons.  Good memories.DSCN0728

today

thinking of faraway friends

thinking of old roommates and careless times

remembering that they didn’t feel so careless then

thinking of the rarity of real, true friendship

the richness of true community, how we were so blessed to share it.

thinking of times to come.

how different things are

thinking how I miss they way they were

thinking that I love the way she says “this is my family” and recites each of our names.

knowing it is different now.

hoping she has a “stand-in family” when she is in her searching years

praying that they will be as nurturing, encouraging, admonishing and lovely as mine.

i am thinking of you today.

feilds of green

It seems like forever ago that I was working on these invitations and my spring subscription note cards.

Back then, I was dreaming of spring.  The sun was warm, things were budding and the weather was alluding to a wonderful season… since then, the temperatures have plummeted, we have seen April SNOW showers and most of the flowers are struggling to stay alive.  If you live in the Northeast section of the country… you know what I am talking about.  I talk (complain) about the weather a lot, I know, but I have serious issues with the spring that is racing away from us, as we are approaching May(!!!?!?!??!!!) with temps still in the 30-50 range.  Maybe I am just not used to being back in Rochester…

I had the pleasure of creating these spring inspired invitations for a bridal shower.  Being free to create pretty much whatever I felt like, with a color scheme of yellow and green, I was immediately drawn to thoughts and images of fresh grass.  I just happened to have some Paper Source clover card stock lying around, the pop of green was just what I was looking for.

I was more than thrilled to have another opportunity to create something using my silhouette cameo.

Here is how it all came together!

the process

It should never surprise me how the design process is so full of twists and turns.

Yet it ALWAYS does.

Sometimes I step back from my final creation and think, “wait, how did I get here?”

Once back at home with all my new papers, I have some ideas rolling in my head.

Something like this

and something kinda like this

I had a desire, a picture in my head of something with layered patchwork with the floral papers, something vintagy, and springy, and textured… but clearly, I did not hit it with this one

I mean, it is fine, but it is nothing like the picture in my mind, and doesn’t shout “YES!!”

So I walk away.  Go about my day.  Pick up Saida from my sisters.  Show them to Ben.  Unsettle.

And then I walk past my desk, “what about burlap, and that other paper that I loved! I bet it matches the linen tape…”

And Bam!

There it is…

finding the flowers

When I get a bouquet of flowers, I sort of love when they start to die off.  I don’t know why, but I just love finding the little gems left over and cutting them down into a smaller vase.

Maybe it is because they are the survivors, maybe it is because it’s making something new out of something old, maybe it because it is just a small full burst of floral goodness…

whatever it is, I just like it.
